Type 01 Is A 1,015-HP EV That Could Make Or Break Jaguar

This is the Jaguar Type 01, an ultra-luxury EV that the brand is betting its entire future on. Do you think it is the right model for Jaguar?

Jaguar has pulled the wraps off the Type 01, an ultra-luxury electric vehicle (EV) that was previewed nearly two years ago by the Type 00 Concept. In 2021, the company announced that it was going even more upmarket, and the Jaguar Type 01 is the vehicle that could make or break its radical brand transformation.

The Jaguar Type 01 doesn’t have too many surprises at this point, since it basically looks like the Type 00, but with an extra set of doors. Up front, there isn’t a traditional grille. The fascia has been carved out to emulate a grille, and this is where the new Jaguar wordmark appears. The grille is flanked by thin horizontal LED headlights, while the lower fascia has an air intake for the batteries and electric motors.

Moving towards the side, the Jaguar Type 01’s very long hood gives it a very aggressive profile. The roof is very low relative to the wide shoulders, giving it sporty proportions. Honestly, though, I’m not a fan of the large charger port at the fenders, as it clearly sticks out from its otherwise dynamic silhouette. This then leads us to its rear end, wherein the steeply-raked fastback roofline has no rear window. The rear fascia, meanwhile, has horizontal lines that visually hide the taillights. Overall, the design of the Jaguar Type 01 is bold and distinct, and whether you like it or not is up to you.

Just as distinct as the exterior is its interior, which has a very bold design that focuses on a minimalist approach. What stands out about the interior is how architectural the dash layout is, and unlike most cars these days, the small 7-inch central touchscreen, primarily for the climate controls, is refreshing to see. This is mounted at the vehicle’s central spine, which divides the left and right sections of the interior. Yes, this is only a four-seater full-size luxury sedan. The driver, however, has a large 24-inch digital instrument cluster and a two-spoke steering wheel with capacitive controls.

With a central spine dividing the interior, those at the rear are treated to two individual seats. Since the lack of a rear window will likely induce claustrophobia, the Jaguar Type 01 has an expansive glass roof. Oh, and without a rear windshield, the driver will have to look at the ClearSight Rear View Display mounted at the base of the windshield. There’s also a 38-speaker surround sound system, among other interior amenities.

Underpinning the new Jaguar Type 01 is the new Jaguar Electric Architecture. It is a platform that’s based on an 850-volt architecture, which allows the large 118-kWh lithium-ion NMC battery to be charged at a maximum DC output of 350 kW, resulting in a 10 to 80 percent of just 20 minutes.

With three electric motors, thus providing all-wheel drive (AWD) traction, the Jaguar Type 01 has a total system output of 1,015 horsepower and 1,365 Nm of torque. Though a 0-100 kph time has not been provided, the high-performance luxury EV still delivers an impressive WLTP-rated range of 450 miles (724 kilometers).

Production of the Jaguar Type 01 is set to begin next year. As the brand’s sole model for now, the Type 01 will likely head to the Philippines in late 2027 through its distributor, Inchcape. With only one model moving forward, this ultra-exclusive EV will certainly dictate the future of the Jaguar brand moving forward.
