The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), the official distributor of Chevrolet in the Philippines, has recently announced during its virtual anniversary celebration with the media that it will launch five new cars in 2021. Among these five new cars are the all-new C8 Corvette, Tahoe, and Suburban.
The announcement was made by Atty. Albert Arcilla, President of TCCCI. Apart from these three cars, the executive also revealed that two other cars will be launched next year. While the model has not yet been revealed, the company says that these two are global vehicles produced at a manufacturing plant that caters to left-hand drive markets. This includes North America, China, or South Korea.
Revolutionary from the ground up, the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Corvette C8 switches to a mid-engine layout for the first time. The all-new mid-engined Corvette C8 uses a lightweight aluminum-intensive structure with a few carbon fiber parts here and there such as the curved rear bumper beam. Additionally, the dashboard and front and rear trunk tubs are made from an ultra-lightweight material derived from fiberglass and a proprietary resin. Chevrolet says that the material is so light, it actually floats on water.
Having a mid-engine layout gives the Corvette a completely new sheet metal from its predecessors. This gives it a shorter hood which also happens to be a front trunk. Its front fascia is characterized by a wide air intake in the middle flanked by large air vents on the sides which leads to a radiator. The sculpted bodywork channels air into massive side scoops that cool the engine. Lastly, the rear fascia is characterized by a bumper with vents for the engine bay and a rear diffuser featuring four tailpipes.
Like the exterior, the C8 Corvette’s interior is a radical departure from its predecessors. A stylistic canopy houses a long array of buttons for the climate control system. This design also gives a clear separation between the driver and passenger. A squared-off steering wheel gives drivers an unobstructed view of the 12-inch fully digital instrument cluster. On the right of the digital gauge cluster is an 8-inch MyLink infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, as well as NFC for an easier pairing of devices.
Power is provided by an all-new, mid-mounted 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine that produces 490 hp and 630 Nm of torque. An optional Z51 Performance Package in the North American market boosts output to 495 hp and 637 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. It is still unknown whether we will get the Z51 Performance Package as standard or not.
The other two cars that the American automaker will launch is the all-new Tahoe and Suburban. The two new SUVs feature a sharper front fascia that bears the same fundamental look as the Silverado pick-up truck that these two SUVs are based on. The LED headlights are now smaller, which are then flanked by boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. The side profile features a redesigned greenhouse and a striking line that runs on top of the side windows. Meanwhile, the rear fascia gets a more elegant design which is finished off by a pair of striking LED taillights. As ever with these two SUVs, the Suburban is essentially the long-wheelbase version of the Tahoe, so do not be surprised that these two simply look the same.
Step inside, and you will be greeted by a completely different interior compared to its predecessor. Thanks to its all-new platform, Chevrolet claims significant interior gains for both models. Cargo space is up by a whopping 66 percent for the Tahoe and a still-impressive 19 percent increase for the Suburban. Legroom for the third-row seats is also up by 254 mm for the Tahoe. Elsewhere, the two SUVs share the same all-new interior design that features more premium materials and technology than ever.
Under the hood of the all-new Tahoe and Suburban are three engine choices. The base 5.3-liter V8 petrol engine produces 355 hp while the bigger 6.2-liter V8 petrol engine produces 420 hp. The highlight for the new Tahoe and Suburban is the all-new Duramax inline-6 3.0-liter diesel engine, which produces 277 hp and 623 Nm of torque. All engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Just like the C8 Corvette, powertrain details for the Philippine market have not yet been revealed.
