Mercedes-Benz isn’t like most luxury car brands out there. While other premium brands usually only offer SUVs or passenger cars, the three-pointed star brand offers a wider variety of luxury vehicles such as this Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
Vans don’t usually come to mind immediately when one thinks of luxurious ways to travel. Sure, vans offer a lot of space, but these boxes on wheels don’t often come with the level of luxury you’d expect from a premium product. As such, the V-Class occupies a segment where it only has one or two true competitors. This unique positioning enables the V-Class to cater to a unique set of customers looking for the space of an apartment but with the luxury and comfort of a penthouse.
For starters, there’s this luxury van’s imposing exterior design. With the three-pointed star logo upfront, the V-Class demands respect on the road. The grille is then flanked by a pair of adaptive LED headlights that are beautifully detailed. For this model year, the V-Class has been updated with a sportier front bumper and new alloy wheels. With this van’s black paint scheme and chrome detailing, the V-Class just oozes class and luxury.
The V-Class’ elegant design theme continues inside. Build quality and materials are impeccably good. There’s a generous amount of soft-touch plastics, real wood trims, and exquisite metal details. Oh, and of course, being a premium German car, the doors shut with a solid thunk. Whichever knob, vent, or switch you operate, there’s a satisfying weight and click to it that you wouldn’t expect in a van. To further set the mood, occupants can enjoy the configurable LED ambient lighting and the excellent Burmester surround sound system.
With three rows on offer and two seating configurations, there’s a V-Class to suit a wide variety of needs. What we have here is the V 220d Avantgarde Long with the 6-seater configuration. This luxurious configuration provides all occupants with their own individual captain’s chair for maximum long-distance comfort. In addition, entrepreneurs or businessmen on the go will appreciate the folding tables. Not only is it perfect for enjoying lunch while on the move, but it’s also perfect for closing business deals and signing contracts. In short, this V 220d Avantgarde Long is perfectly suitable for both work and leisure.
Thanks to its excellent packaging, the V-Class has a generous amount of cargo room. It’s also handy that there’s a parcel shelf that divides the cargo area into two layers. Of course, in typical Mercedes-Benz fashion, there’s a set of foldable baskets for your groceries and other knick-knacks. Thanks to the power liftgate that features a rear window that can easily be opened separately, there’s no need to open the entire tailgate if you simply need quick access to the cargo area or the parcel shelf.
Under the hood of this V 220d Avantgarde Long is a 2.1-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine that produces 163 hp and 380 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a smooth 7-speed automatic transmission. It’s also worth pointing that while I’m not a fan of electronic gear shifters, Mercedes-Benz’s column shifter is an exception to this. It’s easy and logical to use, unlike other electronic systems.
Out on the open road, the V 220d Avantgarde Long’s driving manners err towards the comfort and laidback side of things. Power is delivered in a linear fashion, and along with the responsive automatic transmission, overtaking with the V-Class isn’t a problem at all. Oh, and because this is a diesel, this luxury van easily does more than 9 km/l. While fuel economy is probably the last thing in the minds of this van’s target market, the clear advantage of excellent fuel economy is a longer range with a full tank of gas.
Those behind the wheel of the V 220d Avantgarde Long will also enjoy how easy this van is to drive. While its length of more than 5 meters can be intimidating at first, the generous glass area means this van is easy to place on the road. If all else fails, there’s a plethora of driving aids such as all-around sensors, Active Parking Assist self-parking feature, and the sharp 360-degree camera system.
As a whole, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is perfect for families or executives looking for a luxurious way to travel in and out of the city. With its impeccable interior quality, elegant exterior design, and spacious practicality, this is the most practical and family-friendly Mercedes-Benz yet. It also certainly helps that it is frugal at the pumps and that this luxury van, despite its sheer size, isn’t intimidating to drive at all.
