Honda’s Next-Generation Hybrids Will Include A V6

Honda is hard at work at its next-generation V6 hybrid system, along with other developments for its future EVs.

Ever since the Prelude’s development, Honda has been hard at work developing their hybrid systems. Last year, they revealed their next-generation e:HEV 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrids, and this time, they have now revealed details of their other hybrid developments, including a future V6 hybrid.

The next-generation V6 hybrid systems will be used for Honda’s large vehicles. This isn’t the first time that they’ve done such a setup, since the previous Honda Legend and even the NSX utilized a V6 hybrid system.

The next-generation e:HEV V6 hybrid, according to Honda, will be 30 percent more efficient than its pure gas versions. They are achieving this with a new, more efficient V6, along with highly efficient drive units and next-generation energy management control.

Furthermore, as proof of electrification often improving performance, Honda will improve the V6 hybrid’s full throttle acceleration performance by more than 10 percent compared to the pure gas V6 models currently on sale in the same segment today.

The most likely vehicles where you’ll see the next-generation e:HEV V6 hybrid will be in Honda’s large vehicles, like the Pilot and Passport. Therefore, these will be mostly vehicles for the North American market.

Meanwhile, the next-generation V6 hybrid drivetrain will be underpinned by Honda’s next-generation midsize vehicle platform. Vehicles using this platform and drivetrain will be introduced sometime in 2027 onwards. Honda promises a high level of driving fun and refinement thanks to its highly rigid structure. A stronger, more rigid chassis also means a lighter body, as this will allow Honda’s engineers to use fewer metals.

This next-generation midsize platform will also transfer from construction methods to its next-generation electric vehicles (EVs), perhaps the production versions of the Honda 0 Series EV lineup.

Speaking of which, Honda also revealed upcoming developments for its Super-ONE Prototype–an electric kei car with performance intents that’s set to go global. The Super-ONE Prototype’s EV drivetrain will feature a “Boost Mode”, which increases power for a limited time. Meanwhile, a simulated seven-speed automatic, complete with sensations of a fuel cutoff and shift shocks, along with Active Sound Control (ASC), will let drivers experience a simulated feel of a gas engine.

All of these developments are expected to come as soon as 2027, and will help Honda go one step closer in achieving carbon neutrality whilst still injecting sportiness to its electrified vehicles.
