MG Philippines is bringing in a new version of the MG 4 electric hatch. This one, however, is not related mechanically to the MG 4 that’s currently on sale in the Philippines already, which is rear-wheel drive (RWD). To separate it from the RWD version, this one is called the MG 4 Urban, which is front-wheel drive (FWD) and carries a more friendly orientation.
And by that, we mean that compared to the sharp and sporty looks of the MG 4, the MG 4 Urban has a more rounded silhouette. It is longer than the MG 4, and in China, this succeeds the RWD model. Elsewhere, the MG 4 and MG 4 Urban are sold side-by-side, with this model’s more rounded looks catering to a wider and more mainstream audience.
Full LED exterior lighting is fitted as standard, and MG says it is inspired by elements from the Cyberster two-seat electric sports car. The MG 4 Urban also has aero wheel covers for aerodynamics, while the rear end features full-width LED taillights that feature the design of the Union Jack flag.
Inside, the MG 4 Urban has a very spacious cabin, thanks to its slightly larger dimensions over the RWD version. The MG 4 Urban also features a horizontal dash design that’s built with plenty of soft-touch materials and leatherette surfaces. It also runs on a software-defined vehicle (SDV) electrical architecture, which means that it can receive new features through over-the-air (OTA) updates. The driver gets a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, while a 12.8-inch touchscreen is where most of the vehicle’s functions are controlled. Thankfully, there’s still a degree of physical controls around the interior.
As a rival to the likes of the Geely EX2, the Chery QEV, and the new GAC Aion UT, the MG 4 Urban has similar specs in its electric drivetrain. The MG 4 Urban has a 147-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels, which is fed by a 43.2 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that’s good for 403 kilometers of NEDC-rated range. This vehicle also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), along with DC fast charging that allows a 20 to 80 percent charge in just 35 minutes. Unfortunately, MG Philippines did not reveal the maximum output of its DC fast charging capabilities.
The MG 4 Urban is yours for P1,198,888, but for the first 100 buyers, the vehicle comes with a P50,000 discount and a free 7 kW AC wall charger.
