PH New Car Sales Stabilize In May, Electrified Vehicles Suffer Supply Constraints

CAMPI and TMA reports that automotive sales for May have largely stabilized, but they are still lower versus the same period last year.

The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) for May reported a combined sales of 33,532 units, representing a 24 percent improvement versus the previous month. Together with industry estimates, the May total auto market results ended at around 35,200 units, reflecting a 6.9 percent increase from the previous month.

However, with 167,324 units sold from January to May, this represents a 12.1 percent decline versus the same period last year. Historically, May serves as a rebound month after a lean April market. CAMPI President Jose Maria Atienza stated that focus on energy efficiency remains a major factor in the customers’ purchasing decision.

“We continue to observe expanding demand for various types of Electrified Vehicles (xEVs), with cumulative January – May sales already doubling vs. last year. xEVs now account for 18 percent of the total market, up by 9 points from the previous year. The accelerating growth trend is only held back by availability constraints resulting from the sudden surge in demand,” said Atienza.

“Meanwhile, the more stable fuel prices also helped pull up demand for conventional Internal Combustion Engine vehicles, with May ICE sales growing by 32% versus the previous month. Our overall market outlook has improved with actual vehicle sales performing better than previously expected despite the fuel crisis,” he added.

Among CAMPI-TMA members, Toyota leads in May 2026 in terms of sales volume at 17,076 units sold. Mitsubishi is in second at 5,415. Rounding up the top 5 are Suzuki with 1,441 units, Ford with 1,260 units, and Isuzu with 930 units.

Noteworthy brands whose sales surged during the fuel crisis that began in March include Jetour (176.8 percent growth), Lynk & Co (67.9 percent), Chery (55.3 percent), and Tesla (38.9 percent). VinFast may be worthy of mention since its sales grew by a staggering 3,523.8 percent, but with 2,283 units sold versus the 63 units it sold in the same period last year, then it’s a figure that would only sound nice without taking things into context. These are sales figures that are compared to the same period last year.

Take note, however, that this is not the entire automotive industry’s sales figures, as this only takes into account the CAMPI members. BYD, Chevrolet, Volvo, and brands under Autohub Group are part of the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID). Brands that are not part of CAMPI are only estimated, but the estimated figures are included in the sales tally.
