iCaur is a new brand from Chery Group, and they’ve quickly expanded their lineup to now consist of three vehicles with the introduction of the V25. The iCaur V25, as the name suggests, sits between the subcompact V23 and the midsize V27, and the available powertrain choices also reflect this positioning.
The new iCaur V25 is available as a pure electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid range-extender electric vehicle (REEV). The EV version is offered in both RWD and 4WD, with the former having a 248 horsepower and 300 Nm single electric motor, while the latter gets dual electric motors with 449 horsepower and 505 Nm of torque. The lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery size of both versions is the same at 80.16 kWh, and a 30 to 80 percent charge through a DC fast charger can be achieved in 25.7 minutes.
Meanwhile, the REEV version uses a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine, and its sole purpose is to charge the battery. The dual electric motors of the REEV version produce the same system output as the 4WD EV version. Its 34.31 kWh LFP battery is good for a 150-kilometer pure electric range, while its total hybrid driving range is more than 800 kilometers, both based on NEDC testing.
The iCaur V25’s rugged looks may give off the impression that it rides on a body-on-frame structure, but that’s not the case. It is still a unibody SUV, but thanks to its cage-type platform, iCaur says that it has up to 30,000 Nm/deg of torsional stiffness. This has been achieved through five horizontal and six vertical beams, plus 80 percent high-strength and advanced high-strength steel. It’s safe to say that the batteries are also contributing to its rigidity. Its unibody construction should enable sedan-like comfort, whilst having extra rigidity that will keep the body rock solid, even when traversing wildly uneven terrain.
As for its design, the iCaur V25 mirrors the looks of the V23, albeit stretched and widened. The front fascia contains circular LED headlights, a chunky front bumper, and a clamshell hood. Like other iCaur models, customizability plays a role in its customer appeal. The front bumper can be modified to fit various hooks and auxiliary lights, among other possible attachments. Even the roof or the wheels can feature contrasting highlights to match your personality.
The C-pillar of the V25 is also pretty thick, as there is no quarter window in this vehicle that measures 4.7 meters long. The rear fascia gets a swing-out tailgate that’s hinged on the side, since the doors hold the spare tire. The tailgate has a soft-close function too. Overall, the longer proportions, in my opinion, work really well with the V25’s aesthetic.
Moving inside the iCaur V25, it follows a similar rugged aesthetic as the other models. Rectangular shapes dominate the interior, which surprisingly is finished with soft padded textures that make it feel very upmarket. Amazingly, there are also physical controls with a satisfying click and feel. Unlike the V23, which is a four-seater, the V25 is a genuine five-seater, considering that its exterior dimensions are nearly in the midsize SUV category.
Of course, tech plays a heavy role inside the V25. There’s a horizontally oriented, letterbox-style digital gauge cluster that seamlessly blends with the dash design, plus there’s also a 15.4-inch main infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ambient LED lighting sets the tone inside the V25, and so does its expansive panoramic sunroof. There are also heated and cooled front seats, along with dual wireless chargers and a large center console storage area.
The iCaur V25 is now on sale in select markets worldwide. This vehicle is also confirmed for the Philippine market, though before that happens, iCaur is set to launch as a brand in early November.
