Mitsubishi Motors had earlier announced that the Pajero is set to debut in the fall of 2026, but that was still a vague time frame. Today, however, the Japanese automaker has announced a firm date for its launch–September 2, 2026.
Yes, that’s right; that’s just a week away from today. The Mitsubishi Pajero nameplate officially returns soon, and here’s what we know so far.
In Mitsubishi’s latest teaser on its Pajero landing page, the Pajero nameplate is being spelled out with a few hints of the vehicle being shown. Some of those include a plush interior with tan and black leather upholstery, gray alloy wheels, the T-shaped LED headlights, and a rotary controller for the Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive (AWD) technology. The teaser also showcases the dashboard-mounted multi-information gauge pod, which became the nameplate’s defining feature, will be reinterpreted in a digital format.
The Pajero will reportedly get the 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel engine from the Mitsubishi Triton, but this has not yet been officially confirmed by the Japanese automaker. Depending on the tune, this engine produces at most 201 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque, and rumors suggest that it may utilize the eight-speed automatic of the Montero Sport instead of the Triton’s six-speed automatic.
We already know that the full-size Pajero will debut with a body-on-frame platform and unique suspension tuning, which they recently teased, but Mitsubishi will reportedly follow up with a compact unibody crossover SUV around 2028 or 2029. This will be joined by a kei-class off-roader similar in size to the Suzuki Jimny, though unlike the Jimny’s body-on-frame construction, this will also utilize a unibody crossover platform with an available hybrid drivetrain from the Xforce HEV.
Mitsubishi’s path is very similar to what Toyota has done for the Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser in 2026 doesn’t just include the full-size Land Cruiser 300, but also the Land Cruiser Prado and, more recently, the compact Land Cruiser FJ.
